Hey, OPPO. I hope all of you rad people are doing well! I had a minor inconvenience in my life that has become a full blown first world problem. Enjoy my struggle below:

Kinja'd!!!

A few weeks ago the door on my garage broke. I was alerted with a picture from my roommate with the caption “don’t worry, nothing hit your car”. That was my immediate concern and he was correct. My car was fine. It turns out, the wheel on the top section sheared off and that made the top two segments bend and crack in the middle. None of this is a big deal except the storage rack it tipped over, but even that was an easy cleanup. I rent (Because LA) and the garage door was old and janky the entire time I’ve lived at my current place. I was going to be busy slash out of town a few weekends so I wasn’t really in a hurry to get it replaced. I finally told our management company last week as they were at our place inspecting the plumbing. All of this is pretty straightforward. Except, I happen to have a special car I care about deeply residing in the garage.

The CARnage

If I owned a Mustang, or a BMW, or even a 911, I would have parked it in the driveway, left out a house key for the contractor, and went to work like any normal day. But that’s not the life I chose for myself. Instead, I bought a Ferrari (Have I told y’all that before?). I couldn’t leave it in the garage and risk a contractor damaging it. I can’t leave it outside all day for, reasons , and I can’t drive it to work for other reasons. (ask in the comments if you must)

Kinja'd!!!

its got a horse, close enough

So that left me with the question of what in the heck to do with it while I’m at work. The answer came in the form of my friend for whom I’m very grateful. He lives a few short blocks away and has a locking 1 car garage. So every morning this week, I’ve been waking up early, manually getting my door open and shut (even though I was told not to mess with it), pulling my car out, and waiting for my friend to go to work so I can use his garage. Then, in the evening, doing it in reverse. His garage is really tight so it’s a little stressful and in some ways physically painful.

Kinja'd!!!

Like a glove

There is only about a foot to open my door. This wouldn’t be an issue on most cars but my doors are super long. And the sills are about a foot wide. And you sit super low in a heavily bolstered seat that is mounted closer to the front than the rear of the door. Luckily I’m a spry, thin, and athletic. Even so, I can definitely feel a pull in my hip and knee trying to get in/out. I guess I’m getting old.

Kinja'd!!!

The door wouldn’t make it to the first stop so it shut while trying to take a picture. You can see how far away the seat is from the door opening, though.

Thankfully, this saga should be finished today. The new door should be in so my car can finally have its home back.

T L;DR: I’m getting a new garage door and I have to drive my Ferrari every morning #FirstWorldProblems

Happy Thursday!

why, uh, won’t you drive it to work?

Four reasons. The most legitimate is that since I have a collector car policy, there is specific wording excluding commuting with my car. I could probably make something up but doesn’t seem worth the risk. Minimum coverage in CA is like $15k so if someone rear-ended me and their insurance only covered $15K and mine dropped me, I would be SOL.

Also:

Driving rush hour on the 405 in that car sounds like might nightmare

I don’t really have a good place to park at work (would be on the street in not a super nice neighborhood under pine trees)

And: I don’t want anyone at work knowing I have a Ferrari. Even though it cost me 3 series money, no one knows about cars and would assume they are paying me too much. Or the $15/hr shop guys would throw a fit. I don’t want either of those headaches and it sends the wrong message.

Pro tip - roll down the window, makes getting in/out a lot easier in a pinch. Used to have tiny garage that we fit two cars into somehow.

I figured it would be your last point, but didn’t think about the commute.

I mostly care about the last point but I’ve started thinking more and more about the others.

I normally keep the windows down for this reason and having the top off is even better. But, I’m not sure how my friend’s plumbing works. If I pipe that ran over his garage broke, I’d be happy my windows were up haha. I know there is nothing running in the ceiling of my garage so I get way with it but his apartment is above his garage and I know there is a bathroom on the same side.

It’s weird . I told everyone I’m close with pretty quickly but I rarely give details into my personal life at work. There isn’t really anyone my age here that I’ve connected with. I also don’t tell strangers or new people I meet unless I find out they are into cars haha

I just saw this post, I completely understand the last bit. I’m not as subtle are you, but I try not to project the fact I have two BMWs.

It feels weird hiding a big part of your passion but I definitely just don’t want to have a conversation about it lol.

At least to a non-car person, your cars probably look the same. They just assume you have a silver BEEEEEEMMERR

It can be hard to talk about a Ferrari with some people, because all they think when they hear that is $$$$.

This is true, although it illicits more questions of why, and those can be hard to explain.

People just have preconceived notions they want to uphold in their minds. I drove it to my running group’s annual holiday brunch thingy this year. A lot of people there know about and have seen the car but still asked if I could pop the hood and what not. We mostly talked cars, which is great! I love those exchanges. But after I closed everything up, I heard one guy talking to someone else (I never met either person) say something about he would love to have one if he was also some tech startup wiz kid or something along those lines. I just smiled and kept going about my business. He should just buy a beater and a Ferrari instead of the next shiny CUV if he really wants one that bad. But I didn’t feel like having that conversation hah.

Your answer to why you have two should be “because I like them and my personal finance is none of your business”. If only the world was that simple (:

I don’t think most people think about cars like we do, couldn’t conceivably drive a beater when they could afford something much newer. People that get it, understand, those who don’t, won’t. The mention of Ferrari still triggers expensive , but usually when it comes to maintenance . That said, I’ve probably spent as much on my M3 as you have your Ferrari. Personally, I think you made an excellent choice on the car.

The world is never that simple, but I’m prepared to delve into several different answers based on who asked. I recently went on a date with a girl from the internets and was at a loss to explain why the M3 was much better car then the 328i.

Exactly my thoughts!

Your M3 has way more // /M badges. Thus it is better ;)
